The best feature is simplicity

by

As a software developer, I’m always frustrated when developers or entrepreneurs think that the best way to develop software is to throw the kitchen sink at it. One of the best books about the right way to develop software is Rework, by Jason Fried.

When you build something, start with a single purpose. We did this while building TheDiabetesResource.com. Actually we read this book before starting the rebuild of this site. The purpose of TheDiabetesResource.com is to provide a listing of D-related businesses and websites. That feature is front-and-center and it is clear to the visitor what we do.

I often wondered why this isn’t the case for BG loggers. I want to log my BG numbers, but when you check out the iPhone apps, logging is usually just one of the features of the app. It’s not any more prominent than the other features. I would venture to guess that the other features don’t get anywhere near the usage of the main feature of logging numbers, but they take up screen space, and make the app more difficult to navigate.

As an app developer, I want to take up this challenge and build a very simple app. It logs your number. That’s it. forget the charts, graphs, medication log, food log, calorie counter, exercise counter. Forget the blog posts and advice and the other junk I’m never going to use on my phone.

What do you think? Would you use something like this? Let me know if I should build it.
