A Documentary Film on the Quest to Cure Type 1 Diabetes

A cure for Type 1 diabetes is like the legend of Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster – many talk about sightings but no one has successfully documented the appearance. This may be a game changer in the hunt for a Type 1 diabetes cure.

Vox Pop Films specializes in unscripted storytelling and much of their work is focused on medical research. Patient 13 is a documentary film that follows Scott King – scientist, entrepreneur and Type 1 diabetic. He has been on a 30 year journey to cure diabetes.  Scott was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1977.

Working with a team of world-renowned scientists, Scott King helped develop the Islet Sheet. The Islet Sheet is the device that could change millions of lives forever by restoring glucose regulation and insulin production to people affected by Type 1 diabetes. To raise the stakes, Scott will be Patient 13, the 13th person to participate in his own clinical trial.

The documentary film Patient 13 is important in this process because the audience will experience living a medical breakthrough. Historically islet cell transplants have been successful in mitigating Type 1 diabetes but require lifelong use of anti-rejection drugs to prevent an autoimmune attack of the newly introduced islets. The Islet Sheet protects the islets from the  autoimmune attack without the need for anti-rejection drugs. This may surpass just a personal success – it would be a  global victory.

Scott King and his team are entering into the final phase of research before going to human trials. Based on results from a study currently being conducted in California, Scott will be preparing for the possibility of a human trial in 2013. If you are as excited to witness this documentary of medical history – please help Vox Pop Films see it though.

This project will only be funded if at least $30,000 is raised by December 2, 2011. To make this project see the light of day and make the dream of a cure be seen by many – please back this project at:

A significant  contribution has been made by Dex 4, the company behind fast-acting glucose tablets. The goal is to raise $30,000. The current money raised is just over $20,000. With just under 2 weeks left – the goal is so close!

The research is happening regardless of the movie. But showing people the impact of a triumph like the Islet Sheet is immeasurable. Give the reality of curing diabetes a face – help make the documentary film Patient 13 a reality.
