JDRF car driven by Ryan Reed in the ARCA Racing Series

Very cool headline but it is cooler that Ryan Reed, a person with type 1 diabetes, is driving to start the festivities at Daytona International Speedway on February 18th, 2012.

Happy Valentine’s, Ryan! Actually last year his gift was being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.  But the present this year was beyond his wildest dreams. “Racing at Daytona is a dream-come true,” said Reed. “Since I was a kid I dreamed of the day I would have the opportunity to compete on the historic track. And then to go to the test with Venturini Motorsports in December and be at the top of the charts on the first day was unreal!”

After Ryan’s diagnosis, he was told that his racing career was over. However using the drag of diabetes he fueled his ambitions to drive. Reed’s off-track goodwill has made him a National Celebrity Advocate of JDRF, the world’s largest funder of research toward curing, treating and preventing T1D and its complications.

Ryan is an 18 year old from Bakersfield, California. The car is real. The proof is in the pudding watching Lacy break it down to Black Eyed Peas in front of the JDRF car.
