RAGE Signaling on Cardiovascular Disease in Diabetes


RAGEThe American Journal of Medical Genetics published a study investigating something called RAGE signaling and the role it plays in cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is a higher risk for people with T1D and T2D. Knowing more about RAGE signaling and how it influences cardiovascular disease is worth a briefing.

RAGE is the receptor for advanced glycation endproducts. AGEs are bad news in the book of life with diabetes.  AGEs are the result of glucose metabolism, like the ashes  after a fire. Now picture the ashes all over your hone. This is the mess AGEs cause in the body of a person with diabetes.

RAGE signaling can result in an elevated level of pro-inflammatory cytokines, found in people with diabetes. This exacerbates diabetic complications such as cardiovascular disease. The mess AGEs make and the super burn RAGE signaling puts-out is a recipe for disaster in diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

RAGE is linked as the consequences and causes of Types 1 and Type 2 diabetes. RAGE is not just a negative word, it’s the kind of word that does what it says and says what it does. RAGE starts the fire and keeps it burning in T1D and T2D.

The research has identified RAGE as the cause and effect of all things bad in diabetes but it has also identified a way to disarm the frightful receptors for AGEs.  By developing therapies that quiet the RAGE receptors, people with diabetes may not be so easily agitated to develop subsequent diabetic complication.
